Earthquakes and Tsunami Hazards of Coastal BC

Dr. Ed Nissen will speak on Earthquakes and Tsunami Hazards.

They are amongst the most devastating of natural hazards, and while they are impossible to predict, seismologists are making great strides in anticipating their locations, frequencies, and magnitudes. In this presentation, he will discuss the unique tectonic setting of Vancouver Island and describe the three particular types of earthquake that our local plate motions can generate, of varying risk to Victoria. He will also describe the secondary hazards of tsunami waves, and discuss ways that we can mitigate the worst of earthquakes and tsunamis, both in our homes and as a society.
