The Future of Canadian Space Astronomy
February 21, 2023 @ 11:45 am - 2:00 pm
The first results from the James Webb Space Telescope are already revolutionizing our understanding of the Universe and our place within it, revealing the youngest stars, the oldest galaxies, and water in the atmospheres of distant worlds. Canadians are playing a key role in leading these efforts, and much of this work is happening right here on Vancouver Island. Join Dr. Tyrone Woods from the National Research Council of Canada on a tour from Victoria to the edge of the Universe, and a glimpse at what’s next for Canada in Space!
Biography: Dr. Tyrone Woods is a Plaskett Fellow at NRC Herzberg in Victoria, BC. There, he studies the physics of some of the most energetic events and objects in the Universe, by combining theoretical models with observations across the electromagnetic spectrum. In addition to preparing for JWST, he is also a Science Co-lead for the CASTOR mission, a proposed flagship Canadian space telescope. Before returning to Canada, he completed his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Munich, Germany, and held research fellowships in Australia and the UK.
