The Victoria Hand Project: Making a World of Difference ~Nick Dechev, Ph.D.

May 16, 2017 @ 11:45 am - 1:30 pm

Around the world, some 38 million people need artificial hands, or prostheses, but don’t have access to care. This is a daunting challenge, one being met with innovation by a team based at the University of Victoria. The Victoria Hand Project uses 3D printers to create hands for amputees in developing countries like Nepal, Guatemala and Ecuador. While conventional prostheses can cost as much as $3,000, the 3D models cost about $300 each.

The incredible work the team does was recently recognized for making a world of difference, when the Victoria Hand Project won $250,000 in the Impact Challenge, run by Google.org, Google’s charitable arm.
